| Types of Challenge Course Elements |
Initiatives and Low Elements Develop individual and group initiative, team work and leadership skills. The individuals within the group learn to
utilize their resources, work together and communicate ideas as they aspire to
complete a given challenge. This process of action-learning followed by group reflection stimulates concrete
insight that can be immediately transferred to the work environment. While the group initiatives can usually be
done indoors or outdoors, the low ropes elements takes place on elements constructed in the woods. The low ropes
elements require the members of the group (typically 8 to 12 participants per team) to become more involved in the safe execution of the elements using a
technique called “spotting”. Initiatives are used with nearly any size team and focus on mentally and
slightly physical challenges.
|
High Self-Confidence Elements Raise
self-confidence and recognize personal potential through appropriate physical
challenges. These events challenge participants to take physical risks and achieve goals despite fears. Learning to overcome fears with the support
of the group provides powerful opportunities for growth. Participation in the high events requires
safety equipment, strict safety procedures, and specially trained Sandy Hill
staff.
|
High Team-Building Elements Combine the power of the low ropes elements with the intensity of a high course and you
have the recipe to impact even greater change and growth for a team. Sandy Hill’s High Team Building elements
involve teams of 15 to 25 participants in planning, executing, and physically
supporting the team members on the high event. Team members actually belay for one another allowing a greater level of
participation and some amazing learning and growth opportunities. These events are world-class in construction
and out-of-this world in effectiveness. They will truly take your team to new heights.
|
Is it really safe?
What if there are different levels of physical ability in our group?
What if people are afraid of heights or have physical limitations?
|
Sandy Hill has an excellent safety record. Each year thousands of campers and adults of
all ages and abilities have positive experiences on the course. Some people initially fear that our programs
might be fine for some of their participants but that others might not be
capable of handling the physical tasks involved. In every phase of the program our professionally trained staff
strive to create an atmosphere of safety, trust, and fun.
Not all elements on the course are physically taxing. Those elements that are more physical in nature do have ways for
all team members to be involved through spotting, belaying, planning, and
encouraging. We embrace a “challenge by
choice” philosophy, empowering each individual to step out of his or her “comfort
zone” to learn and to grow – at their own pace and level of challenge. Emotional safety is also an important aspect
to challenge course training. Participants are encouraged to create a positive atmosphere where all
team members feel valued, comfortable to make mistakes, and freed to give and
receive honest feedback.
As for safety precautions, participants will be instructed on proper spotting
techniques for the low elements. Trained and experienced facilitators oversee all activities including the
proper use of rock-climbing style harnesses and of the redundant safety belay
systems on the high elements. The Sandy Hill Challenge Course is inspected by independent observers on a regular basis,
and all elements are designed to meet or exceed industry standards. |
